My Visit To The Toronto Railway Historical Museum

We had a very special visit to the train museum. We met the manager, Bob and he gave us a tour.
The museum is in an old round house in downtown Toronto.  It was built in 1929 for steam trains. Now it's a national historic site and it was donated to the museum by CP Rail.
We saw Bob's office. It's in a train car that was from the actual 1917 Halifax explosion. The train car saved the life of the general manager because he was inside eating breakfast at the time.
Here is what it looked like back then:

There was lots to see at the train museum.  I did like the lego train. It was cool. Bob controlled it and made three trains go at one time. One of the volunteers made it in his parents basement but lent it to the museum until he has kids of his own. I would like a cool train like that.
Picture
I played the train simulator. It was really difficult. I got to honk the horn (but not in the stations! Only ring the bell there) on the simulator and use the real train controls from a GE U33 Locomotive. I learned a lot about driving a real train.
Picture
The top speed is 70 miles per hour. Also, there's no steering in a train. It just follows the tracks but the engineer controls the speed. And it takes more than a mile to come to a complete stop if you're driving 65 miles an hour. That's because there's nothing to stop the wheels from sliding on the tracks. Like a sled on mud. I never knew I could drive a train!

Then Bob took us outside to see more.

We saw the old train station. Bob said that people used to gather around and sit in the train station and drink coffee there because there would have been a radio so they could all hear the hockey game.
I had a fun time at the train museum. I would like to go back in the summer to take a ride on the mini train.
If you want to visit too, just go to www.torontorailwaymuseum.com
 Thanks Bob!

I love that you went to the museum and got a tour from Bob. I think it would be cool if you had train Legos and could build a cool train. What do you think? Love you (even though you don't know me). xo

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Hi Nathan,

My name is Ian and I am 8 years old. My Grammy lives in Toronto and read your newspaper article in the Toronto Star. She cut it out and sent it to me. I live in British Columbia and like you I LOVE trains! I think it is really cool and special how you get to go spend time with the people at CP! It's awesome that you get to ride the trains! Iwould love to be a train engineer when I grow up! We live close to a rail line and I see the CP trains come by everyday! Mostly coal trains because we live close to coal mines. I really liked reading about your trip to the train museum. When I go to Toronto to visit my Grammy, we often go there for a visit. I like the Lego train exhibit too! I have a Lego train at home which is my favorite. I just got my first model train set for Christmas! I can't wait to read more about your adventures with trains!

Nathan,

I just read the Toronto Star story about you online. That story led me to your blog. I think it's great! When I was a boy your age, I loved trains too, especially CP. My grandpa worked for CP. He fixed the freight cars in Windsor. My other grandpa also worked for CP in British Columbia. All my uncles and even my dad worked for CP too. Right now, I have a cousin who works for CN, but he worked for CP before. I think your blog is great. I blog about trains, too, but CP doesn't run trains through Ottawa, where I live, so I don't get to see too many of those trains. I am going to link to your blog on my blog so all the people who read my blog can now read yours. Keep up the good work!

Michael
